New Module in Flora Croatica Database
General Searching Recommendations
= name of family (familia) on
for example: Papaveraceae. The
database contain list of 184 families of vascular flora of Croatia.
= name of genus (genus) on Latin
language, for example Papaver. The database contain list of 1086
genera of vascular flora of Croatia.
= name of species (species) on Latin
language (specific epithet),
for example: rhoeas. Full name contain also the abbreviation of taxon
author(s), for example rhoeas L. The database contain list of 5509
species and subspecies of vascular flora of Croatia.
Common name = common,
public, name of some taxa, mostly on Croatian, but also on other languages
(English, French, German, etc.). The database contain list of 17065 common names
from which 14500 on Croatian. This part of data is dynamic one and the changes
- Form field "Species" enable
searching only via specific epithet. Thus, for finding the particular species or
subspecies it is necessarily to set up searching condition also in the field
"Genus”. In opposite, search string, for example, "officinalis" will
result with list of all taxa, from different genra, having such specific epithet
(Asparagus officinalis L., Borago
officinalis L., Melissa officinalis

because searching string could be placed on different part of full common name
It is suitably to use "*" with
queries on genus or family name, when this names are long words. For example
instead Family = Aristilochiaceae, it is enough to put Family =
(there are no other families with this name beginning, a even so, in the result
list the user could easy chose what they want – the possibility of wrong input
It is not possibly
to find what is not there!
Frustration "Why I don’t receive nothing for species xxxxx, when I know that
this plant have intensive uses for yyyyyyy?" or "How that query on common name
xxxxxxx result with no species, when everyone know that this is common name in
yyyyyyy". The answer is – it is not in the database. Data input is constant, but
far a way from readiness. All constructive information is welcome and will be
processed with care, and authorship respected.
